Most people dread the thought of their next wax. The results are great, but actually going through with the wax can be a nightmare that you want to avoid for as long as possible.
Instead of constantly putting off your next waxing session, you can make some changes and get a better wax with less pain and discomfort. Use these tips to do just that.
Make Sure Your Hair Is at the Right Length
Waxing can actually be more difficult if your hair is too short or too long.
If your hair is any longer than about three-quarters of an inch, you’ll want to trim it before waxing. Leaving it any longer than that can easily become messy and tangled, which can make your wax much more painful.
The minimum length for body hair before waxing varies. While most traditional waxes require your hair to be at least a quarter of an inch, new formulas can pick up hair as small as two millimeters. Check your preferred wax to get specific information.
You should exfoliate beforehand to remove dead skin and dirt, but don’t do it the day of your wax. You should exfoliate at least 24 hours before actually waxing. This way, you get rid of all the dirt and debris without leaving your skin open for infection.
It’s also a good idea to relax and avoid external stressors for a few days before waxing. Don’t wax when you have a big test around the corner or a job interview coming up. The stress actually makes your nerve endings more sensitive, causing more pain.
When You’re Just About to Wax, Get Ready the Right Way
Some of the tricks you use before waxing might actually be bad for your skin.
Don’t ice the area to numb it. You’ll just end up closing the pores, which makes it harder to pull out the hair, leading to more pain.
You also shouldn’t moisturize just prior to waxing. Oils in the moisturizer can cling to the wax, which will make it hard to attach to your skin. If you do need to moisturize first, do it the night before.
Choose the Right Wax
If all you’ve ever used are wax strips, you may be surprised to learn that there are actually many different types of waxes.
Wax strips are definitely great for beginners, or for DIY waxers who aren’t very confident in their waxing ability. All you have to do is heat them up, apply, and then pull off.
Sugar waxes are water-soluble, and are often much more tolerable for people with sensitive skin. They also sometimes come in additional forms, such as chocolate and fruit waxes.
Hot wax should usually be left to the professionals. With this style, you’ll warm the wax up and then apply it to the hair with a stick. After the wax solidifies, you can pull it off.
Give Your Skin Some Aftercare
You can very easily irritate your skin if you don’t care for it properly after waxing.
The most important thing to do after waxing is give your skin some space to breathe. Wear loose, breathable clothing, and don’t suffocate your skin by taking baths or applying thick creams.
While you shouldn’t add a pore-clogging cream, it’s definitely a good idea to moisturize after waxing. Use moisturizing oil or aloe vera gel to bring back some of your skin’s natural moisture and reduce swelling.
It’s equally important to avoid tanning or excess sun exposure right after waxing. Sure, it’s fine to walk out to your car, but don’t go for a run or head to the tanning salon. Your skin is incredibly tender at this point, so UV rays can have even more of a significant effect than usual.
