Trends or Tease: 2021 Makeup Trends That Are Keeping Our Eyes Open

As the beauty community continues to come out with new products and new ways to wear makeup, the treads grow, too. But what trends should we expect to see walking down the street this year? Read below to learn about the trends the world is talking about.

Bright Eyes

Some of the most amazing work, when it comes to makeup, happens around the eyes. Graphic liners, bright colors, bold lashes—all steps are becoming bigger than ever before. With everyone starting to wear masks in 2020 and continuing to do so in 2021, many people are expressing themselves with bold eye makeup.

It might be time to finally master the art of popping on a pair of false eyelashes, too. “We’ll still play up whatever is visible and can still show off,” says makeup mogul and Artist Couture founder Angel Merino regarding above-mask makeup. “I see eyes and lashes having a major moment in a fun and creative way.”

Nostalgic Makeup

Everyone loves a ‘90s or ‘80s moment. “I see a nod to the ’60s being a major trend. Look at Ariana Grande’s new ’60s-inspired era happening right now,” says Angel Merino. “Creating graphic shapes with eyeshadow and liner are a great way to make you bright-eyed and fresh.”

With the rise of matte shades and people moving away from shimmers, there is also a new rise, graphic liner. There is nothing like a hot neon color or a bold white look to bring a fashionable outfit together. “Soft, pale pink has been popular for quite some time now, but I feel like we’re now moving into more muted colors like tans, sage greens, pistachios and baby blues,” says Jackie Aina, a Nigerian-American beauty content creator, activist and social media sensation.

Bold Brows

It is no surprise that the closing of hair salons and waxing parlors would bring about the rise of bolder brows. With quarantine giving people the chance to grow and change their brows, thicker and filled in is the way to go. There are different versions of brows that are in this year:

  • Feathered brows: When brows begin looking like feathers after being brushed up and out
  • Bleached brows: Using dye or a bleaching agent to lighten the brows
  • Eyebrow lamination: A microblading alternative that gives the illusion of fullness and growth
  • Brick brows: Thick, filled brows coming back from the ’90s and early 2000s.
  • Eyebrow slits: This is where you take a tiny razor and remove a slit of hair into your eyebrow
  • Painted-on black arches: This is just as it sounds: The sharpie brow is back.
  • Boy brows: Alternatively named the “low arch brow,” which can be seen as youthful and deeply defined

Natural Skin

Beauty and simplicity are meeting this summer. Many people are choosing to put the foundation, bronzers, and concealers away and sway toward simply showing the skin they were born in. Dr. Karen Kagha, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Boston, says she’s seen an uptick in patients coming in for in-office procedures like fillers and skin-lifting, which can help skin look fresh without makeup.
