Students enrolled in esthetician school obtain a wealth of information about how to care for their future client’s skin. They are trained to perform services that will reduce the early signs of aging, allow the skin to feel softer and have a healthier glow, and how to prevent serious skin issues.

Laser Treatments and Other Common Procedures Taught in Esthetician School

Some of the most common procedures taught in esthetician programs are laser treatments. These services, offered at medical spas and dermatologists’ offices, can do everything from effectively removing unwanted hair to reducing cellulite. Here are some examples of the types of laser treatment you can learn to perform as a licensed esthetician.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a highly effective skin treatment that lasts longer than shaving, waxing or tweezing. It is one of the most common procedures performed by cosmetologists and estheticians. The process involves beaming concentrated light into the hair follicles. As the light is absorbed, the hair is destroyed.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Laser skin rejuvenation is a process in which skin layers are precisely removed, allowing new skin cells to form. This leaves the skin with a tighter and more youthful appearance. This procedure can be performed on its own or along with other cosmetic procedures.

Radiofrequency Skin Rejuvenation

Radiofrequency skin rejuvenation, or RF therapy, is a non-surgical procedure that tightens the skin. During the treatment, energy waves are used to heat the deeper layer of the skin known as the dermis. This heat stimulates the production of collagen. This is a protein naturally produced by the body that gives our skin its firmness. RF Therapy is used to eliminate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as sagging skin.

Coolsculpting

Coolsculpting is an FDA-cleared treatment for noninvasive body contouring. It permanently removes up to 25% of treated fat cells in nine different body areas by freezing the cells. It is the ideal method for eliminating stubborn fat in areas such as the thighs, abdomen, upper arms and under the chin.

Cellulite Reduction

Cellulite reduction can include various types of laser treatment such as Coolsculpting or Cellulaze. These procedures are designed to kill off fat cells and reduce the appearance of cellulite. They can also help thicken the skin, which can be useful since skin usually becomes very thin wherever cellulite forms.

Tattoo Removal

Laser therapy to remove unwanted tattoos is a popular procedure performed by estheticians in spas and salons. The laser reduces the appearance of the tattoo by breaking up the pigment colors using a high-intensity beam of light. Clients typically need to have more than one treatment to lighten or fade the tattoo so it is less noticeable.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment used to improve the appearance of scars, promote hair growth, and increase collagen production. This treatment has been around for many years but has recently become more popular because of new technology used during the process. During microneedling treatment, very short, fine needles are inserted into the skin for rejuvenation purposes.
