This is exactly the case with Amberley Ramirez, who has always had a love for beauty, but was only able to convert it into a career with the help of Ogle School. What made you realize you really loved cosmetology?

I’ve always been really interested in beauty, hair, and makeup. Growing up, I was the girly girl in my family. And I just wanted to do something that I could bring a passion to a job that I would enjoy.

What are you most passionate about?

I’m really passionate about the places that it can take you. When I first started school, I was just like, yeah, you go to the salon and you do hair. After I got in, I started talking to instructors and different staff members, and I realized just how far you can go in this industry. I didn’t even think about runways or theater or anything like that. It’s just amazing how far you can take this. And you can travel all over the world to just do hair.

What has been your biggest obstacle during school?

I would definitely say balancing. I’m a mom, I’m a wife, I’m a student. I work at night and so just trying to find a balance between all of those. I give my attention 100% to all of them, so I can be the best I can be at everything. And make sure not to take too much away from somebody else. It’s definitely the balance in all of it.

What advice would you give to other aspiring cosmetologists?

I would say just don’t give up. Keep going. There have been so many times I’ll be like, “That’s it. I can’t do this anymore. It’s too hard. I feel like I’m missing too much out on my daughter. And that’s not fair to her. It’s not fair to me.” And as a mom, you just have that real maternal thing about you. You just want to be there for everything. And just to do it while they’re young if you can.

That’s what my mom always told me, “She’s young, Amberley. She’s not going to remember this. So do it now. That way, when she’s older and in school and doing all these activities, you can be there for all of it.” That was one of my big reasons for wanting to do cosmetology. So I can set my own schedule. So I don’t have to miss any of my daughter’s activities ever.

What inspires you about cosmetology?

What inspires me is getting that light up out of them. I want every single client that sits in my chair when I’m done, for them to have that look on their face, to be like, “Oh, my gosh.” Because that’s going to make them come back to me. And then that’s going to make them tell their friends.

What has your experience been like with clients?

I have several regulars. Some come once a month. Some come every week. I have a couple that come every single week. And I just love chatting with them, and they tell me everything. It’s like a bond with them.
