Emily Evans Grows into a Career

What made you decide on cosmetology?

I just kind of jumped in. I was originally going to be a zoologist. I went to school for a while and things were pretty good. And then it got bad, all of a sudden, and school just wasn’t right for me anymore. I decided to take a break. I took a half-year break, and then I needed to do something. So people were like, “You’re always good at hair.” Then I toured Ogle and here I am.

Why did you choose Ogle?

It’s family-oriented. Everybody’s super nice. People smile at you. They don’t look at you like you’re competition. You’re a friend and they want to build you up. People learn from other people. I learned from my friends here and they learned from me. It’s communal learning.

What are you most passionate about?

I do a lot of updo styles. Updo styles are my main facet of creativity. That’s what I like doing the most. And I did one of these updo styles for a competition we had here at school. It was like a little mini competition for some bleach. I didn’t win it, but Vivian recognized that it was a really cool updo, so she nominated me for Intercoiffure, I made a video, and I went to New York.

What is Intercoiffure?

Intercoiffure is an organization of lead hair stylists. So, to give you a reference, the person before I went on, that received her award, was the hairdresser for Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, and Kim Kardashian. I was a little bit like, “Am I in the right place?” But they put on a lot of shows, they’re in charge of different salons and stuff. There’s also a tier level, and my two mentors were both A-level Intercoiffure members.

What is Intercoiffure all about?

The lead stylists are really what it’s about. They can go on stage and do demos, like finish styling hair. I went on stage and finished styling a crown around her head. And I used hairspray to kind of texturize and put it in place. It was terrifying because it’s all lead stylists in the crowd. It was very A-level. There were no people allowed in that were just like normal people. It was all experts.

I was definitely really scared at first. It was just a whirlwind. It just happened in the blink of an eye. One day, I got there, we were creating this whole entire plan for the show, and the next day, I’m doing the show. And I’m like, “Oh, okay.” But then after I got on stage, I was fine. It was just kind of normal. I was like, “Oh, I’m just doing hair now.”

Who’s in your support group?

A lot of people that come in here, both of my grandparents come in—both sets. My parents come in all the time. My girlfriend comes in probably the most. I make her come in and she lets me try out different colors and stuff on her hair. The first time I ever bleached someone’s hair was my girlfriend’s hair and I took her platinum. She said I could do whatever, which was a mistake for her! But she had short hair, so it grows back quickly. I have a lot of friends here at school as well. The teachers are supportive, as well. Everybody is. It’s a good all-around support system.

What is your biggest motivation?

Looking at others around me and realizing that they might be doing better than me now, but if I keep working, I can get there. I can meet their level. I can continue to grow past them. I can continue to be the best me even if I’m not the best at one thing. I just have to work harder.
