9 Tips for Making Dry Hair Healthier

Both summer and winter can cause dry hair, and it’s a frustration that many people don’t enjoy experiencing. But many people end up needing to deal with it. If you have dry hair, whether it’s plagued you for years or you’re just dealing with it in a short-term manner, here are nine tips to infuse some moisture and avoid future damage.

1. Be Careful When You Apply Heat

Heat can be a huge component of hair damage, and it’s important to mitigate it as much as possible. Invest in a heat protectant spray, use the lowest level of heat possible, or look into heatless styling options, especially if your hair is already dry.

2. Choose a Shampoo Specifically for Dry Hair

A shampoo that’s made specifically for dry hair will avoid stripping oils and moisture from the hair over time, which is something that other shampoo formulations may do. A dry hair formulation knows that you’re struggling with this problem and will pump moisture back into the hair.

3. Try Shampooing Less Frequently

If you have dry hair, you may need to cut back on the number of times per week you shampoo your hair. If you’re someone who washes your hair every day, try shampooing only 2-3 times per week. This can help improve your hair’s moisture.

4. Make Sure Your Conditioner Is Up to Par

On the other side of the shampooing problem, it’s also important that you have a high-quality conditioner. Even if you aren’t using shampoo on a certain day in the shower, you should still apply conditioner. A conditioner formulated for dry hair specifically can also help.

5. Avoid Regularly Exposing Your Hair to the Sun

The heat of the sun isn’t the only reason it can negatively impact your hair. UV rays can have a similar impact on hair as they do on the skin. Either add a UV-protectant hairspray to your finished look or try wearing a hat or scarf if you’re going to be in the sun.

6. Take a Break From Chemical Treatments and Colors

Although chemical treatments and colors can be a great way to enhance your hair’s appearance, they can also strip your hair of moisture and protective oils, which can give your hair a dry, crunchy feeling. Go back to your more natural look and actively increase the amount of moisture in the hair. You can go back to chemical treatments once your hair stops feeling dry.

7. Only Brush Dry Hair

Many people brush hair right after they get out of the shower to detangle it and style it for drying time. However, wet hair is more sensitive than dry hair, and doing this can damage it. Instead, opt for a wide-toothed comb to detangle wet hair and allow the hair to dry before you brush it.

8. Invest in Good Brushing and Combing Tools

It’s important to have great tools to style your hair without damaging it. Invest in a great boar-bristle brush and a high-quality wide-toothed comb. Spending a bit more money on these tools can help your hair stay healthier for longer.

9. Get Tips From a Salon Stylist

A salon stylist has trained in keeping people’s hair healthy and safe, which means talking to a salon stylist is a great way to learn what you should be doing for your specific hair issues. Book an appointment at an Ogle School clinical salon to help you revitalize your hair and maintain health in your hair even when you’re caring for it at home.
