Enroll in Placements

During your time at Cosmetology School, it is very likely that you will get the chance to go on placements. These placements will show you what particular cosmetology careers are really like on a day-to-day basis. If you have more of an interest in nails and nail art, see if you can attend a placement in a nail salon; if you love styling and cutting hair, try to get onto a placement at a hair salon; and if you love applying makeup, apply for a placement with a beauty therapist or make up artist. Take on a Wide Range of Clients

Throughout cosmetology school you will experience hands on training in the school’s own salon. You will treat real clients that will be after a number of different treatments, and a variety of different styles. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and attempt to take on a wide variety of clients, so you can see for yourself which area of cosmetology is the one which you have the most passion for. Furthermore, experiment with your creativity outside of school —  designate one night to all things hair, another to skin care, and another to make up etc. All this extra practice will help fix in your mind what area of cosmetology you would like to pursue in your future career.

Take Part in Competitions

One of the best experiences of cosmetology school, will be attending hair and beauty competitions. At these competitions you can experiment with high fashion hair colors, big and beautiful hair styles and concept make up looks. This will give you an insight into the fashion styling side of cosmetology, which may completely change your focus for your future career. You may find that you don’t just want to work as a makeup artist, but you also want to be a fashion stylist, producing avant garde looks for magazine photo shoots or runway shows. Take every experience offered to you in cosmetology school, every new experience could help to focus your career journey.

Ask Advice

You and your instructors will really get to know each other well at cosmetology school, and they will be there for you.
